Bodie State Historic Park

Climate
Bodie is at more than 8000 up in elevation, in the high desert of the Eastern Sierra. Famous for its terrible weather and lack of water, Bodie requires visitors of today to make reasonable preparations for a visit, just as visitors of 150 years ago.

In the summer, it can be deceptively dry. The high elevation can make the air temperature pleasantly warm but the arid air will dehydrate you before you know it. Make sure you bring water and drink it often while visiting.

The sun is intense and the air is thin: you’ll want a hat and sunscreen even if sunburns are not usually a problem for you. Make sure children are protected from the sun too.

In summers we get fabulous hailstorms and thunderstorms. They're generally very short-lived, but can provide beautiful photo opportunities.

In spring and fall it can be sunny yet remarkably cold, especially around park opening and closing times. You’re always well advised to have a jacket on hand at Bodie.
