Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

The Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve (MLTSNR) is located on Highway 395, 13 miles east of Yosemite National Park, just north of the town of Lee Vining, California. MLTSNR includes some of California's most unusual landscape. The spectacular setting includes ancient Mono Lake, a massive, 65 square mile alkaline lake with dramatic tufa towers jutting out in places, set at the base of the majestic Sierra Nevada, which rises up impressively to the west. The Great Basin spawls out endlessly to the east.

The Reserve was established to preserve the unique lake environment, including its "tufa towers" of calcium-carbonate spires and knobs, formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. The haunting beauty of the area inspires the artistry in many visitors, prompting them to return again and again. Mono Lake's unique beauty affects people greatly.

The Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center is a great place to start your visit to this area. The center is located just off Highway 395, north of Lee Vining and includes a variety of exhibits about the natural and human history of the Mono Basin. Both CA State and Federal visitor center staff stand ready to help you plan your explorations of Mono Lake and the Eastern Sierra.
