Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

Climate
Mono Lake is located at 6500 ft. in elevation. This is high desert: the weather can be changeable. In the summer, sunny weather means warm, dry days (carry water!) and cool evenings, but thunderstorms are often a possibility and in late summer, generally expected. Layered clothing is recommended.

In the winter, it tends to be frigid: snowy and dry. Despite the below freezing temperature, winter is a particularly beautiful time at Mono Lake. The crowds are gone, a quiet stillness prevails, and snow crystals sparkle on the tufa towers. Locals are particularly welcoming during the lonely winter months.
