The Sierra State Parks Foundation is pleased to announce that the Hellman Foundation donated $100,000 towards our Hellman-Ehrman Estate Endowment. This generous gift, along with contributions from other donors, raises the value of this endowment to over $200,000.

The Hellman-Ehrman Estate Endowment was established for the exclusive use of restoring and maintaining the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion and associated historic outbuildings, ensuring funds are available to strategically implement work to preserve this wonderful piece of Tahoe history… forever.

Overlooking almost two miles of Lake Tahoe shoreline, the Hellman-Ehrman Estate was constructed in 1903 as the summer home of California financial pioneer Isaias W. Hellman. His grand but informal summer home, called Pine Lodge, was completed in 1903 and is considered one of the finest examples of California Craftsman architecture in the high Sierra. His daughter, Florence Hellman-Ehrman, inherited the estate, and she and her husband, Sydney, spent many summers here entertaining family and friends.

The need for funding to operate and maintain the park's historic structures continues to be a challenge. State resources alone are inadequate to meet the need, and the Sierra State Parks Foundation has been stepping in to keep the historic house museum open and maintained since our inception. For over 50 years, the Foundation has funded hundreds of restoration projects at the Hellman-Ehrman Estate, ranging from building stabilization to plaster repairs.

Our long-term goal is to establish an endowment fund to return $100,000 annually for the exclusive needs of the Hellman-Ehrman Estate. The endowment will allow us to take care of both the immediate and long-term needs of this historic landmark today and for future generations.

The Hellman Foundation was established in 2011 and is rooted in the legacy of Warren (great-grandson of Isaias W. Hellman) and Chris Hellman, who modeled an approach to philanthropy based on curiosity, respect, and partnership with local communities. They were known for their eclectic generosity and willingness to commit their time and energy to causes they believed in. The Hellman Foundation's approach incorporates and builds on these principles, taking on important causes and supporting leaders who make a difference.
