Donner Lake Paddling Tours

Ever wanted to explore Donner Lake by raft? Join a California State Parks guide for a guided lake exploration! These family-friendly, beginner-friendly tours offer a mix of wildlife spotting and local cultural history.

  • When: Every Thursday (through September 10, 2026) at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm

  • Cost: Free!!

  • How to join: Spots are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis

Learn from the Experts: Sierra Speakers Series

On the third Saturday of every month, head into the climate-controlled Main Theater of the Visitor Center for the Sierra Speakers Series—a fantastic collaboration bringing local history and environmental science to life.

  • Upcoming Highlight (June 20): Don't miss Maria Mircheva’s presentation, “The King of Pines in Peril,” starting at 4:00 pms right after the park's annual Legacy Day celebrations! Learn all about the local efforts to save our iconic sugar pines.

Cozy Up to Saturday Night Campfire Programs

If you prefer your history with a side of stargazing, grab a headlamp and a light jacket and head to the campground amphitheater (just south of Ridge Campground) at 8:00 pm on Saturday nights. From deep dives into bear biology to musical performances with a historical twist, these informal gatherings are the perfect way to cap off a summer day.

PRO TIP: Visit for Free with a Library Park Pass! Did you know you can check out a vehicle day-use pass for free from your local public library? California public library cardholders can borrow a California State Library Parks Pass, which grants free day-use admission for one vehicle at over 200 participating state park units—including Donner Memorial State Park! Check with your local library branch before you head out to see if one is available to borrow.

Historical walking tours are also offered most Thursdays through Sundays at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, meeting right outside the Visitor Center.
